BIOECONOMY AT THE HEART OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN THE AMAZON
Home to the world’s largest tropical rainforest — with 60% of its territory located in Brazil — the Amazon holds around 10% of all known biodiversity, is the largest reservoir of freshwater, and is the most important forest block for global climate regulation. It is home to 28 million Brazilians, including 600,000 Indigenous people from 198 different ethnic groups. With such rich social and biological diversity, the bioeconomy emerges as a key solution for the region’s sustainable development — especially through rural development initiatives like Agroforestry Systems (AFS), which are positioned as one of the region’s strategic economic activities.
